Your team captain's role is to encourage team recruitment and register your team. They are also responsible for the team as a whole and for conveying all pertinent information to the team as well as arranging team practices and attending team captain's meetings.
Creating a Team
Dragon Boat Teams consist of 20 paddlers - a minimum of 8 women is required - a drummer, who keeps the beat of the stroke and a trained steersperson, provided by the festival. The general consensus is the lighter the weight the drummer is, the better it is for the team. Teams should consider having alternate team members who may be substituted into races at any time throughout the day. Due to their design and size, dragon boats are very stable and are highly suitable for beginners. No experience is necessary to participate and many participants may have never picked up a paddle before their first practice.
Team Equipment and Practice
The Saint John Dragon Boat Committee provides teams will all necessary equipment, access to a dragon boat, paddles, personal flotation devices, and a qualified steersperson for practices as well as event day. Two practices, run by a trained coach are included in the registration fee and will be scheduled the week leading up to the event.
Your team manager's role will be to collect all money's raised by the individuals or team and ensure all information needed to issue tax receipts is forwarded to St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation. The manager will also insure that all waivers and information sheets are completed by team members. This role does not need to be filled by a paddler.
Participants are asked to help support St.Joseph's Hospital Foundation and this year's worthwhile project by fundraising and collecting pledges as a team or individually. Learn more about this year's fundraising project
